How to Survive a Remodeling Project

The "remodeling curve" has been experienced by anyone who's done a remodeling project. These fluctuating emotions occur:

First, elation, when walls are torn down or framed up- the project starts to become reality.

Later, when the work “drags”: disappointment, or even regret the project was started sets in. (construction progress is less dramatic or perceivable)

Finally, elation, pleasure at completion of the space- or realization of the dream.

The curve occurs in all projects over a week or two, so prepare for it. Moving is in the top three of the list of stress factors- and tho remodeling isn’t a move, it has the same disruption- stress is a natural result. Some ideas to reduce stress:

-Mental preparation-knowing bad times are coming will take some sting out;

-Prepare your home to minimize confusion (i.e. set up a temporary kitchen with fridge, microwave, coffee maker, your favorite cups, etc.);

-Get exercise and fun during the project; (try movies, ice cream, and walks)

-Keep up normal household routine. The inclination is to cease housekeeping, but after a week or so it wears on morale. A modified housekeeping routine will help keep you together, along with your space.

Use these ideas and you can smooth out the "remodeling curve". Enjoy your new space with less bumps during construction!
